Washing Machine Do’s and Don’ts

Learning to do laundry is a big part of becoming an independent person. We have all made our fair share of laundry mistakes, like mixing whites and colors or accidentally washing a sweater that was supposed to be dry-cleaned. Maybe you forgot your wallet in your pants or left a piece of paper in your pocket. There are many do’s and don’ts to follow regarding laundry.

There are plenty of items that you shouldn’t put in the washer because they can ruin your things and the appliance. But there are also things you may have never known are perfectly washing machine safe. Check out some of the things you can and can’t put into the laundry.

Pillows – Do

We have been washing our pillowcases in the washing machine forever, but we have never thought to throw the pillow in too. It is recommended to clean your pillows in the machine at least twice a year. Dust and other things can build up on your pillow over time that are bad for your skin.

First, check the tag to see if your pillow is washing machine safe or dry-clean only. Depending on the size of your washing machine, Consumer Reports suggest washing two pillows at a time to balance the load and help the detergent circulate more effectively. Make sure to use the gentle cycle and warm water.

Raincoats – Don’t

It might seem obvious to some people, but most people don’t realize this. If your raincoat is waterproof, how is it supposed to soak up the water in the machine for a deep cleaning? It can’t, and putting your raincoat in the machine can damage it. The washing machine can also ruin the waterproof material.

Instead of putting it in the washing machine, handwash your raincoat. It is easy because the waterproof material allows dirt to slide right off. If you are worried about the smell, soak it in a bathtub with some detergent, then let it air dry.

Plastic Shower Curtains – Do

We all forget to clean things in our homes sometimes, like the shower curtain. It is always getting wet, so it seems like it would be clean. Unfortunately, water can have the opposite effect. Constant water and moisture can create mold, and soap residue can build up on the plastic. To avoid a smell curtain, throw it in the wash.

Putting your shower curtain in the wash is necessary every couple of months. Use the regular amount of detergent and add half a cup of baking soda. Wash it with warm water on a normal cycle, and your curtain will be like new.

Swimwear – Don’t

Swimwear might be designed for the water, but not for the washing machine. The mechanical action and spin cycle can damage the inner structure of women’s swimsuits. Also, most swimwear uses high-tech fabric that can easily be ruined. Instead of ruining your suits, handwash them.

Handwashing is the safest way to make your swimwear last longer and smell fresh. If you decide to wash your swimsuit with your clothes, set it on delicate with mild detergent, and use mesh bags to protect it from getting damaged during the wash cycle.

Sports Equipment – Do

You probably throw your sweaty sports clothes into the washing machine right after wearing them if you are into sports. Unfortunately, many people neglect the rest of their other equipment, like knee pads, elbow pads, shin guards, and gloves. These things are filled with sweat and bacteria and need to be washed at least once a month.

To wash your sports equipment without ruining it, make sure to close all the Velcro so that it won’t stick to other items. Then put each item in mesh bags before tossing them in the machine. You only need a small amount of detergent, and make sure to use the gentle cycle.

Running Sneakers – Don’t

Throwing a pair of sneakers into the wash is completely fine because it keeps them looking new and in good condition. However, it’s a different story about running shoes because they are meant to take the shape of your foot for an easy run.

When you put your running sneakers in the wash, they can shrink and lose shape. You will immediately notice a difference, and they won’t fit as well. Unless you plan to buy a new pair, keep them away from the washing machine. Instead, use deodorizing powders inside and wipe the outsides with disinfecting wipes.
